I bought my 1998 S1 in 2000 when it was 18 months old & had around 16,000 miles on the clock. I always put it in for regular service & kept it in pretty decent condition & have not put many miles on it myself. However, around 8-10 years ago I got really busy with other things in life and didn’t have time to use or regularly get the Elise serviced. It then literally got stuck in my garage ( the garage door locks corroded and I could not get it). I’ve finished off the other big projects in my life and my focus has now started to return to the Lotus. First job to ‘liberate’ it from its garage tomb. I climbed in through an ajoining window into the Elise garage, and with head torch on, managed to work my way to the garage door and unscrew the garage door bolts from the inside and take them totally off, so I could open the doors. It was then that I discovered that the roof of the garage had partially caved in, dumping a load of debris on the Lotus, but fortunately, not causing any damage, but with the roof beams seemingly ‘holding on by a thread’, I wanted to get the Elise out asap. First issue, despite parking it out of gear with hand brake off, the brakes had seized on. I had to very carefully drag the Elise out with my other car (a ‘fun’ experience!). I’ve never had to remove the wheels myself on the car, despite owning it all this time, and just came to take the first wheel off and saw the security cap, which on first glance, looked like it needed a key. I checked both my keyfobs, and my folder with all my Lotus paperwork - no key! I could not recall ever having a key. Took another look at the security nut with a head torch and realised it was a just a cap so there is no key. Then how to get the cap off! A quick google & I found your video - thanks, you saved me!!

I see you start with the outside bleed valve. I've seen others that say, start on the inside. Does it really make a difference? Is it that the fluid goes from the back to the front of the caliper on the bottom, and then the "old" fluid is on the inside waiting to be flushed? What is best?

Did you seal your vents too? Without sealing it seems like a losing battle to continuously dehumidify circulating air that would run the electric bill way up.

I would not use gloves..that way I’ll feel any grit on by fingers..I would not use a brush cause a bristle might fall out off..and finally I’ll use compressed air to blow off each new bearing to knock out any grit that might not see..

This freeze/molding hole plugs can distort, better to push them from the outer edges..like oil seals or sealed roller bearings..

I am not able to pry them off. I dont understand how I am supposed to get leverage, do i push against the clamshell to pop them off? I feel like I will damage the clamshell by putting that much force on it. really wish there was a video of someone actually removing it.

I am buying the deck wash kit today. But I took the spindles off and removed the seal on the inside of both bearings and added grease zerks to all 3 spindles so I can keep water out and the bearings protected.
